NVMe SSD Not Detected in BIOS: Slot Checklist

Begin with the exact M.2 slot rather than assuming every connector is equivalent. Check protocol, physical length and any CPU-dependent restrictions in the board manual.

Confirm the drive and slot

Identify the SSD model and whether it is NVMe or M.2 SATA. Compare its length with the board’s slot table. The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB is an M.2 2280 NVMe drive; the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI documents PCIe M.2 slots, but each has its own length and sharing conditions.

Review CPU and lane notes

On that MSI board, M2_2 is unavailable with Ryzen 8500/8300 series CPUs. M2_3 shares bandwidth with PCI_E2. For a different board, use its specific slot diagram and manual rather than transferring this rule.

Separate detection from boot setup

A drive visible to firmware but absent from the boot list may need operating-system installation or a firmware storage-mode review. Back up data before changing RAID/VMD or storage settings, and follow manufacturer instructions.

Identify where detection stops

Check whether the firmware storage page lists the exact SSD model. If it does, a missing operating-system volume or boot option is a different problem from an electrically absent drive. Record the firmware result before modifying partitions or storage mode. A drive that appears under one M.2 slot and not another suggests checking the second slot’s CPU and lane rules.

  • Read the board’s slot ID and supported length/protocol table.
  • Disconnect power before changing the physical installation.
  • Back up existing data before changing RAID, VMD or boot settings.

When to escalate

If the exact drive is absent in a documented compatible slot after following the maker’s seating procedure, use the drive maker’s diagnostic tool and board maker’s support instructions. Record the SSD SKU, board revision, CPU, BIOS and tested slot. Do not assume a new drive is defective solely from one untested slot.
