M.2 describes the connector and form factor. The storage protocol may be SATA or NVMe over PCIe, and a slot may support only one of them.
Read the exact slot table
Locate M2_1, M2_2 and any additional slots in the board manual. MSI lists three PCIe M.2 slots for the MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI. A SATA M.2 drive should not be treated as supported merely because its card could fit.
Check dimensions and CPU conditions
Compare SSD length, such as 2280, with each slot’s supported standoff positions. Then read CPU-series and lane-sharing notes. On the MSI board, M2_2 is unavailable with certain Ryzen 8500/8300 processors, and M2_3 shares bandwidth with PCI_E2.
Distinguish detection from boot
A drive fitting the slot does not prove that firmware detects it, that it can boot an operating system, or that a heatsink clears the board cover. Verify those topics in the exact board and drive documentation.
Read a slot and a drive as two separate rows
For each intended drive, record its complete SKU, physical length and interface from the drive maker. Then record the board’s specific M2_1 or M2_2 entry, including supported length and whether the row says PCIe/NVMe, SATA or both. A slot that accepts a 2280 card but lists only PCIe does not gain SATA support from the shape of the connector.
- Physical length: for example, 2230 and 2280 require different standoff positions.
- Electrical protocol: SATA and NVMe are not interchangeable labels.
- Configuration: CPU choice or occupied PCIe ports may change slot availability.
When the drive still does not appear
Check drive seating with power disconnected and follow the manual’s firmware detection steps. If the firmware sees it but an operating system does not, investigate partitioning or storage mode separately. Back up data before changing RAID or VMD settings; those changes can make an existing installation inaccessible.
Explore parts after verifying the specifications
Search results can include products that do not match your exact board, revision or slot. Check the SKU and manufacturer documentation before ordering.
