LGA1700 vs LGA1851: Why the CPUs Are Not Interchangeable

LGA1700 and LGA1851 are different CPU sockets. Intel says Core Ultra desktop Series 2 processors require LGA1851 and an 800-series platform; a similar physical outline does not make them interchangeable.

What the socket difference means

The Intel Core Ultra 9 285K is an LGA1851 processor. The ASUS PRIME B760-PLUS D4 is an LGA1700 board. Intel explicitly rules out cross-compatibility, so a BIOS update cannot bridge this socket mismatch.

Do not confuse cooler mounting with CPU support

Intel separately discusses mechanical compatibility for some cooler mounting arrangements. That does not mean the processor can be installed in the older socket. Confirm cooler compatibility with the cooler maker, then check the processor and board independently.

What to buy instead

For a 285K build, begin with a board whose exact product page names LGA1851 and the relevant 800-series chipset. For an existing LGA1700 board, use its own CPU support list to choose a processor and required BIOS.

A quick check with real models

Write down the CPU socket from Intel’s exact processor specification and the motherboard socket from its technical page. For example, the LGA1851 Core Ultra 9 285K cannot be placed in an LGA1700 PRIME B760-PLUS D4. A BIOS download is firmware for a compatible physical platform, not an adapter between sockets.

  • Check the processor generation and socket on Intel’s current page.
  • Check the exact board suffix and socket on its maker page.
  • If they differ, stop before comparing memory, cooler or BIOS versions.

What this test does not answer

A correct socket still does not certify a particular CPU on a particular board. Search the board maker’s CPU support table for the exact model and the BIOS listed with its stepping. Cooler mounting and power delivery are separate compatibility questions that need the cooler and board makers’ current documentation.

Explore parts after verifying the specifications

Search results can include products that do not match your exact board, revision or slot. Check the SKU and manufacturer documentation before ordering.
