DDR4 vs DDR5 Motherboards: Check the Exact Variant

A DDR4 desktop kit cannot be installed in a DDR5-only board, and the reverse is also true. Look up the full motherboard suffix, not just the chipset.

The chipset name is not enough

The ASUS PRIME B760-PLUS D4 is explicitly a DDR4 board. The MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI lists DDR5 slots. Product suffixes such as D4 can be decisive even when two boards share a chipset family or similar branding.

Check before ordering

Read the specification line for memory generation and DIMM type. Then compare the complete kit SKU. A DDR5-6000 kit can be physically incompatible with a DDR4 board before any BIOS or speed question arises.

After the physical check

If generation and DIMM type match, proceed to the memory QVL and the CPU memory controller. Separate default JEDEC operation from an EXPO or XMP target.

Use the full board suffix

The D4 suffix in PRIME B760-PLUS D4 is part of the model identity. Remove that suffix and you may end up comparing a different board with different memory sockets. Read the manufacturer memory line, then confirm the physical kit label says DDR4 or DDR5 and a desktop DIMM form. A shared B760 chipset does not change the module keying.

  • Search the exact board name, including D4 and revision.
  • Check the DDR type before looking at a speed number.
  • Use the exact kit SKU, not the brand family, in the board QVL.

A matching DDR label is only the first gate

After physical fit, inspect the number of modules and any CPU-generation filter in the QVL. The listed QVL run speed is a manufacturer test entry for a specific configuration; it is not the kit’s JEDEC default or a promise that every processor and BIOS will train the same EXPO/XMP profile.
